How to Win Pub Trivia
Knowing stuff helps. Winning is mostly about who's on your team, how you decide, and what you do with the last round.

Build the Team
1. Cover the categories, not the same ones twice. Five history buffs will ace one round and sink in the music round. Aim for spread: someone who knows sports, someone who knows music from at least two decades, someone who reads the news, someone who watched too much TV as a kid.
2. Bring someone older and someone younger. Pop culture questions span fifty years. A team spread across ages covers more of them.
3. Use the full team size. If the cap is six, bring six. More heads means more guesses to pick from, as long as you have a way to decide.
Decide Fast and Well
4. Pick a captain and a writer. One person writes. One person makes the call when you disagree. Arguing by committee runs out the clock.
5. Trust the person who's sure. If one teammate says “I know this” and can say why, go with them. Confidence with a reason beats a vote.
6. Don't change right answers. Your first instinct is often right, and the classic trivia mistake is erasing it after five minutes of second-guessing. Only change an answer when someone has a concrete reason.
7. Never leave a blank. A wrong answer and a blank both score zero. A guess might score one.
8. Read the question twice. “Which is NOT” and “as of this year” trip up more teams than hard facts do.
Play the Scoreboard
9. Know the wager rules. If there's a final wager, know before it starts whether you can bet everything and whether wrong answers lose points.
10. Bet from the standings. In the lead? Wager just enough that second place can't pass you if you're both right. Behind? You need the leader to miss, so bet enough to pass them if they do.
11. Work the picture round all night. If it's handed out early, pass it around between other rounds. It's the easiest place to pick up points while the host isn't talking.
Play the Long Game
12. Go every week. Hosts have favorite topics and question styles. Regulars learn them, and regulars win. Find a night you can make most weeks on your city's page.
And if you lose, at least lose with a good team name.
