How to Start a Trivia Night at Your Bar

A good trivia night turns a slow weeknight into a room full of regulars. Here's how bars set one up.

Why Bars Run Trivia

Trivia fills tables on nights that are usually quiet, and teams stay for two hours. The best part is that it repeats. A team that likes your night comes back every week, and brings friends.

Hire a Host or Run Your Own

Trivia companies bring the host, the questions, the sound system and a following. You pay a weekly fee and they handle the rest. Many will also list your night on their own site, which helps people find you. Browse trivia companies on Pub Trivia Map to see who's active near you.

Running your own costs less but takes real work: writing about 50 to 70 good questions a week, grading, and keeping energy up for two hours. It works best when you have a staff member or regular who loves doing it.

Pick the Night

Pick your slowest night that people still go out on. Early-week nights are popular for trivia because they need the help most, but look at what's already near you on your city's page. If three bars on your block run Tuesday trivia, Wednesday might be wide open. Start between 7 and 8 PM so people can come after work.
